Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic

Windsor, California — July 3–5, 2004

The 2004 Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic took place in Windsor, California, during the Independence Day weekend. The annual event featured colorful hot air balloons, unique designs, and special demonstrations that attracted visitors and aviation enthusiasts from across the region. Weather conditions earlier in the week were unfavorable, and forecasts predicted more unstable air. However, the weather improved significantly for the scheduled flights.

On Friday, conditions were calm enough for the media flight, providing excellent visibility and light winds. Saturday’s mass ascension took place under nearly perfect weather, with wind speeds remaining calm below 1,000 feet above ground level. These conditions made for safe, steady launches and allowed pilots to display their aircraft to full effect. By Sunday, fog returned to the area, and organizers grounded the remaining balloons for safety.

A Cloudhopper called Rosebud participated in several portions of the event, completing a free flight during the Friday media day and a tethered demonstration on Sunday. The Cloudhopper’s basketless design drew attention from spectators and photographers, many of whom had never seen a single-person balloon in flight. Its minimalist configuration highlighted the differences between traditional hot air balloons and personal harness-based systems.

During the Sunday tethered demonstration, multiple ascensions were performed, allowing attendees to observe the control and handling of a Cloudhopper. Additional pilots were invited to operate the balloon on the tether line, providing first-hand experience with this distinctive form of flight. As the fog lifted later in the day and light winds returned, the event concluded successfully. Approximately thirty-five balloons participated, marking another memorable year of the Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic.
